Prime Minister made an announcement at the COP26 summit in Glasgow.
The phase-out of coal from Britain’s energy system is now planned to be brought forward a year to 1 October 2024.
Also brought forward is the ban on sales of ICE vehicles from 2040 to 2035.
In the COP26 launch speech Boris Johnson talked about the pioneering electric taxis of 1897, the pledge to deliver net zero in the UK by 2050 and cutting CO2 by 42 per cent since 1990.
“…in 1990 70 per cent of the power of this country came from coal, it’s now down to 3 per cent – and we want to get it to zero by 2024
and that is because, we’re able to do that, because this county is leading a revolution in renewable energy and by the way, it’s driving our national agenda of uniting and levelling up our country”.
